Lyon secured their place in the Europa League after beating Brest in a thrilling match at the Stade de Gerland on Saturday.
The game was a must-win for both teams as Lyon needed all three points to secure their place in the competition while Brest were fighting for survival in the Ligue 2 table.
With the score tied at half-time, Lyon took control in the second half and dominated the proceedings, creating numerous chances before finally finding the back of the net through Maxwel Cornet.
The goal gave Lyon a 1-0 lead and they never looked back, securing their place in the Europa League with ease.
For Brest, it was another tough defeat in the league and their hopes of survival were dealt a blow as they conceded a late equaliser to leave them just one point above the relegation zone.
Despite the loss, Brest manager Bruno Genesio praised his players for their effort and commitment, but admitted that they will need to improve if they want to avoid the drop next season.
"Today was not our day," Genesio said. "We tried everything we could, but unfortunately we lost."
In contrast, Lyon manager Nuno Espirito Santo was delighted with the result and hailed his team's performance.
"We did what we had to do today," Espirito Santo said. "We deserved this win and I'm very happy for my players."
With the Europa League now confirmed, Lyon will turn their attention to the upcoming season and look to build on their success from last term.
They have already made some important signings in the transfer window and are expected to be one of the top teams in Ligue 1 next season.
Meanwhile, Brest will have to focus on improving their performances and avoiding relegation in the coming seasons.
