On Saturday, Lyon secured their place in the Europa League with a 2-1 victory over Rennes at Stade de Gerland. The result was enough to see them move up from fifth place in Ligue 1 to fourth, putting them back into contention for Europe.
The match started off with both teams playing defensively, but it wasn't until the 57th minute when Lyon broke the deadlock through a well-taken goal from Anthony Martial. The French striker had been causing problems for the Rennes defense all game and his finish was clinical.
Rennes responded immediately though as they equalized just three minutes later through a powerful header from Florian Thauvin. But Lyon refused to be pushed and were rewarded two minutes later with a second goal courtesy of Memphis Depay. The Dutchman's shot from distance found the top corner and gave Lyon the lead once again.
With the game now tied 1-1, it looked like it could go either way. But Lyon were able to hold on for the win thanks to some excellent defending and some excellent finishing from Martial and Depay. The result sees Lyon move one point ahead of Marseille and puts them right back into the mix for Europe next season.
This is a huge boost for Lyon, who have struggled in recent weeks with injuries and form issues. A trip to Paris Saint-Germain this weekend will provide them with another chance to put pressure on their rivals, and with a win or draw they could be looking at a comfortable position come the end of the season.
